Review: Miss Bala

Laura Guerrero (Stephanie Sigman) suffers a terrifying ordeal as she is thrust into the heart of the drug war in Mexico. Her innocent presence amongst terrible men who use her is entrancing to watch. Scenes that contrast beauty with violence and purity with corruption make for engrossing viewing as Director Gerardo Naranjo delivers them with long takes and fast paced action.

Red State is released on DVD and Blu-ray this week in the UK.

DVD Review: The Burma Conspiracy

Tomer Sisley is charismatic and cool in his role as Largo Winch, the heir to his adoptive father’s fortune and company, who has been accused of crimes against humanity. Largo Winch is a Belgian comic book series by Phillippe Francq and Jean Van Hamme that was previously brought to the big screen in 2008 with an origin story that I haven’t seen but will seek out. Largo Winch is a modern hero fighting for the humanitarian cause against the greed of the corporate world; well-paced fight sequences, high speed car chases and explosions make for engrossing and fun viewing.

DVD Review: 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy

This film is being sold to audiences worldwide as a 3D erotic costume epic. Let’s examine that: Yes it’s 3D. Erotic it is by no means, (unless you are a teenage boy who’s only real sexual dalliances have been with the lingerie section of his mums clothing catalogue). Costume’(s), yes these do make cameos (not so much ON the characters) but epic? I’m inclined to agree with this and here’s why…

Super 8 Screener

So, this is what happens when there is so much time between the US release and the UK release - piracy will win.

Yesterday, JJ Abrams new movie, Super 8 hit the cinemas, around the same time, a DVD Screener of the film hit the bay of pirates.

DVD : Miricle at St Anne

A war film from legendary director/writer/producer Spike Lee - but like everything he makes it focuses on the Buffalo Soldiers 92nd Infantry Division which was the only unit during World War Two to be comprised of African American soldiers. This division was mainly used in Europe, specifically the Italian Campaign.

Now I like Spike Lee, I also like war films and the story of Miracle at St. Anna is great. However the film doesn’t live up to the standards as it should, especially with such a talented director at the helm. For starters the film is just way too long, 160 minutes - and it feels like it, maybe even longer and not in a good way.

Safety is the greatest risk of all, because safety leaves no room for miracles and miracles are the only sure thing in life.

The film starts really well, almost in a Saving Private Ryan-esque with a modern time beginning leading into the flashback story which has an epic battle scene. After this the film loses all its pace and direction as it seems lethargic. This is a great shame because like I said the actual story is really interesting. Some questionable cast choices as well, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was probably in the film a total of about 15 to 20 minutes if that. Also John Leguizamo who literally did nothing for the all of 5 minutes I remembered him being in the film. Bit of a disappointment.

It’s a great story but unfortunately the execution didn’t match in a slightly disappointing effort.

Multiplatform release on June 27th.

I was a big fan of SuckerPunch and despite it getting a lot of hate from a lot of places, I still think its an underrated film - but then maybe I’m reading far too much into it.

Here is a video of the uncut ‘Love is a Drug’ scene which will be included in the Directors Cut version of the film - out on the 28th in the US and soon here in the UK.

DVD : Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom has literally blown me away. I had only heard of the film when it won the World Cinema Jury prize at Sundance, and ever since, have been dying to see it. Now, I have and can honestly say that it is easily one of my top 3 films of the year.

The film is the story of the Cody family. Joshua ‘J’ Cody (JAMES FRENCHVILLE) has just lost his mother to heroin and moves in with his grandmother Janine Cody(JACKI WEAVER) and her 3 criminal sons, The Cody Boys.

Eldest son and armed robber, Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody (BEN MENDELSOHN) has got himself in a little trouble lately and is hiding out from a gang of renegade cops. Middle brother Craig(SULLIVAN STAPLETON) is a very successful drug dealer, but has a short fuse and a wild temper. The youngest of the three, Darren(LUKE FORD), just wants to be like his brothers, mostly like Pope. Just as Pope’s best friend, Barry Brown(JOEL EDGERTON), decides that he wants out of the came, recognising that their days of old-school banditry are over, tensions between the family and the police explode.

DVD: Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus

Mega Shark versus Crocosaurus is the latest offering from modern B-movie studio The Asylum. The film is a sequel (yeah you heard me) of 2009’s Mega Shark versus Giant Octopus. It’s of course a straight to DVD title.

Whoever wins… we lose!

I really don’t know what to say about this film. I don’t even think its ‘so bad its good’ but just bad. I know it’s low budget but this sequel has worse acting and plot than the first film. At least the first was in that category of ‘over the top needless awesomeness’ but this is terrible! I admire the idea and what can be achieved for little but it could of been made a lot better.

Is it worth the watch? I guess if you liked the first then yeah you’ll probably find this a hoot but otherwise stay away from it. Certainly do NOT throw down your hard earned cash to buy it, if its on TV by all means watch it but not worth paying for it.
