Review : Red State (2011, Kevin Smith)

Red State was one of the films I was most looking forward too this year. I am a huge Smith fan, not just for his movies, but for his body of work. For years I was a member of the boards and for years I ate up everything he did. It was the good life. 

On the announcement of Red State - a horror film - excitement for a new Kevin Smith film increased by 10. I knew that this day would come one day, the day where Smith would step away from smart-ass comedy and go dark. When the film played all the festivals and started getting good buzz (I don’t read reviews) it went 10 fold again. In this review I’m going to ignore everything that Smith has done with the film - that part is genius, but by no means treading new ground - a big director going truly Indie and grinding to the bone to earn it’s money back is great as a case study for future film makers - but just as with Clerks, there’s only one Kevin Smith and not everyone is going to be able to do what he has done.

Hit Somebody is finally ‘this’ much closer to being on screen. As much as I am looking forward to finally seeing Red State - after missing out on tickets for Brixton - Hit Somebody will be his final film (well a 2 part film) and it’s Kevin Smith for christ sake…Kevin Smith doing a Hockey movie! Trailer : Red State.

It seems so long ago that the first teaser for @ThatKevinSmith Red State came out and now, leading up to the general release we get this, a trailer that only does one thing. Kick. You’re. Ass.

It is amazing how badass this movie looks. I’m not that surprised, I always believed that Smith had it in him, but the framing is entirely different and tone looks so bleak.

In what can only be described as the best Christmas present you can get before Christmas, Kevin Smith has unveiled the first trailer for his horror movie, Red State.

It’s a voice over piece, with flashes of scenes from the film. Not much can be withdrawn from the trailer other than it looks fantastic (Shot on the RED camera), looks very different from any of Smith’s previous films and Michael Parks has got the voice to send shivers down a thousand spines.

The film will premiere at Sundance in January where the rights will be auctioned off and hopefully audiences will get a chance to see it outside of festivals before 2011 is over (Halloween time would probably be a fitting date, but there is a MARCH release date in the trailer so it might be that Smith wants us to see this ASAP.)

You might note that there are two URLs at the end of the video. The first one, http://www.coopersdell.com/ seems to be the place to pick up all the marketing material for the film as it hosts the trailer and all the character posters we have seen so far.

The second, and maybe more interesting site is, http://www.goddamnsusa.com/ which seems to be either the beginnings of something viral, or just a site set up to maybe build a bit of backstory for Red State. Currently it holds a newspaper clipping that goes into a bit about Abin Cooper and his Five Points Church ministry.
